for finitude music s 5th release, label owner marcel heese and alexander kowalski aka d_func. share their visions on thought control. both tracks on the ep harbour the same intent, but each of them approaches it in a different way. d_func. s take revolves around sahko-like bleeps, if you are into early mika vainio or sleeparchive, look no further! but instead of being loopy, it s definitely a builder. its original trance track-like structure is sure to rock many an underground dancefloor. marcel s vision is slower and less straight-forward but creates and maintains a high tension. based on dense a bassline and intricate soundscapes, it builds up slowly, only to explode halfway through. an extra payoff also comes at the very end of a track, its noise/ambient outro making a perfect way to wrap up an amazing party at 8am somewhere deep in the heart of berlin.

ruhig comes back after one year with particles ep as first installment of a double ep on midgar. the record opens with particles, an atmospheric detroit influenced cut made out of synthlines dropping like voodoo spells, epic pads and fragmented beats. eddying follows up with a more direct approach to the dancefloor, 4/4 stomping beat and thin hi-hats backed by lasers and passionate ambiances. etere on the b-side gives the records an halfway breath, sounds like a late afternoon walk in the fields of a southern countryside village (with constructions going on somewhere nearby), before to start again with the sweet and eerie perle, where droney pinching drums are flooded by a swarm of dreamy fireflies. idiom to close the ep with a fast syncopated cut, showing the approach of ruhig to any form of musical expression and genre, far from traditional ambient or deep techno and going further, to reach out daring and more demanding levels.

coeo are to toy tonics records, what master at work were to the house scene of the 1990ies: they bring the soul into the house. their new ep back in the days is a 4 track house stomper that could have been made in 1997 by guys like sneak, dimitri from paris or little louie. but still the similarities to the new berlin sample-house scene around max graef and hodini are evident, too. already their last years superhit native riddim (which is featured as a bonus track on this vinyl) included some heavy jazz samples they found in their parents bag of soul. native riddim has been no.1 in the traxsource charts for several weeks and was the basis for their already huge following. from laurent garnier to tensnake - the feedback has been awesome. now they proceed their way of souldful house. just good taste.

rezzett are arguably one of the trilogy tapes goto acts. the london duo has previously released a trio of impressive, off-kilter eps of fuzzy house and techno jams for will bankheads much-loved imprint. happily, zik zak is every bit as essential as their previous material, expertly blurring the boundaries between techno, experimental electronics, and distorted hardcore. while the drowsy-but-sweaty hey hugo all sampled vocal yelps, sweeping chords and clattering percussion is probably the most obviously ear-catching of the four cuts, theres plenty to get excited about elsewhere. check, for example, the intricate electronics and eyes-closed loveliness of the title track, and the fluid melodiousness of opener afyon or, for that matter, the comforting bliss of ep closer noklue.

dripping out of the pores of tokyo high-rises, aquarium deepspace serves up his debut vinyl release and the second instalment on natural sciences. drawing on a palette of 90 s detroit house music and the electronic tropes of his home town of japan, midnight at the tokyo central is the unspoken soundtrack for the lost souls of the metropolis, recounting the ecstasy of smoke-filled dance-floors, the touch of dry ice melting through a fur coat, and travelling through neon at 6am. narrated by two separate protagonists under one identity, deepspace side explores muscular acid trax, aquatic pads and throbbing deep house jams for the floor, while aquarium on the flip is coated in hazy electronics and dopamine drained murk, drawing on field recordings taken at tokyo s central train station (rainy night in shibuya) through to lush subterranean jams laced in serotonin nostalgia.
